Professor Dr. Jasim Hanoun Hashim Al-Awadi, a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences at the College of Science, University of Karbala, chaired a master’s thesis discussion committee that evaluated certain biomarkers for predicting Type 1 diabetes.
The thesis, submitted by Nabil Sahib Mahdi from the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Kufa, aimed to assess the biomarkers CTLA-4 antigen and sialic acid Siglec-1 in patients with Type 1 diabetes and their relationship to elevated blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c).
The study’s findings indicated a significant decrease in the levels of CTLA-4 antigen and Siglec-1 in diabetes patients, particularly among newly diagnosed younger patients compared to older patients undergoing treatment. The results also showed a negative correlation between CTLA-4 and blood glucose (HbA1c).
This suggests that these biomarkers could potentially be used to predict Type 1 diabetes and their relationship to blood glucose levels.
