Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science at the University of Karbala, Professor Dr. Hassan Jamil Jawad, and organized by the Head of the Women’s Affairs Unit, Professor Dr. Iman Talib Kareem, the College of Science held an educational seminar titled “World Albinism Awareness Day.”
The seminar, presented by both Professor Dr. Iman Talib Kareem and Professor Dr. Narges Hadi Mansour, aimed to provide an understanding of albinism, its types, causes, diagnostic methods, treatment measures, and general guidelines for individuals with albinism.
The seminar included an introduction to World Albinism Awareness Day and the rationale behind designating June 13th as an annual observance day. It also addressed significant challenges faced by individuals with special needs, particularly those with albinism.
The seminar concluded with several key recommendations:
1. Establishing kindergartens and schools in every Iraqi province equipped with all necessary facilities for children with albinism alongside healthy children, to foster mutual acceptance with the help of experts in psychological, social, and educational aspects.
2. Developing the skills of children with albinism and honing their talents and experiences according to their abilities through early detection programs.
3. Creating comprehensive medical departments in major hospitals in each province, equipped with all necessary devices and equipment to diagnose and treat conditions associated with albinism.
4. Encouraging the Iraqi government, through relevant ministries such as Health, Planning, Labor, and Social Affairs, to adopt a general policy to raise awareness about albinism, reduce its prevalence, and promote a societal culture that reintegrates affected individuals.
It is noteworthy that the Women’s Affairs Department at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has directed the organization of seminars and awareness campaigns to highlight World Albinism Awareness Day.
