Assistant Professor Dr. Asil Karim Jabbar, a faculty member in the Biology Department at the College of Science, University of Karbala, participated as a member of the committee discussing a Master’s thesis titled “Chemical and Biological Characterization of Volatile Oils from Thyme and Eucalyptus and Their Effect on the Viability of Hydatid Cyst Protoscoleces In Vitro.”
The thesis, submitted by student Banin Ali Hamza from the Biology Department at the College of Pure Sciences, University of Karbala, aimed to reduce the toxicity of chemical compounds and treatments by using aqueous plant extracts and volatile oils. It also evaluated the production of a natural biopesticide from the volatile oils of eucalyptus and thyme. Additionally, the study identified the active compounds present in the volatile oils of thyme and eucalyptus using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) technology.
The study recommended conducting clinical trials to determine the effects of the volatile oils from thyme and eucalyptus on hydatid cysts in vivo using laboratory animals.
