The Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at the College of Science, University of Karbala, organized a seminar titled “The Impact of Unregulated Mobile and Social Media Use on Academic Performance.”

Presented by Professor Dr. Wafa Sadiq Mohsen and Assistant Professor Dr. Asil Kareem Jabbar from the Biology Department , the seminar aimed to address addiction to smart devices, including mobile phones. Such addiction is recognized as a psychological disorder in which individuals find it difficult to detach from their devices, often turning to their smartphones without need or specific reason. This behavior can lead to various physical, psychological, and social risks, including the sense of isolation experienced by those affected by mobile phone addiction.

The seminar also aimed to raise students’ awareness about the risks of excessive use and its detrimental effects on academic performance. Unregulated mobile use consumes valuable time, distracting students from their studies and proper completion of assignments. Additionally, late-night usage often leads to reduced concentration, which in turn affects academic achievement. The speakers emphasized that overcoming smartphone addiction requires full commitment and gradual disengagement, which can be facilitated through physical activities and hobbies that provide mental and physical benefits.
