The Faculty of Science organized an awareness seminar entitled “Combating Drug Abuse,” attended by students and staff of the faculty. The seminar aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of drug addiction and its associated health, social, and economic consequences.
The seminar provided a detailed overview of common types of drugs, their mechanisms of action, and the harms resulting from their use, with a focus on the link between mental health and addiction and the importance of early prevention. It also discussed the vital role of families and educational institutions in limiting the spread of this phenomenon among young people. In addition, the seminar reviewed Iraqi and international laws related to drug control, as well as the penalties in place to curb drug use and trafficking.
As part of promoting preventive behavior, the seminar emphasized the development of decision-making and refusal skills among youth and the cultivation of awareness capable of protecting both individuals and society. The seminar also stressed the importance of supporting individuals with substance use disorders throughout treatment and rehabilitation processes and facilitating their reintegration into society without stigma or discrimination.
