Iraq & Russia Sign Memorandum of Understanding in Peaceful Use Field of Atomic Energy

During the 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, the Head of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, His Excellency, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Abd Yaser Al-Aboudi signed a memorandum of understanding with the Director General of the Russian State Atomic Energy Organization (ROSATOM), Alexei Likhachev in the fields of bilateral cooperation.

Dr. Al-Aboudi announced that this memorandum is the first of its kind in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy that Iraq has signed since 2003 and is the first for the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission after the enactment of its law.

His Excellency added that the bilateral memorandum of understanding is of particular importance as it is a roadmap for joint work in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy.

Dr. Al-Aboudi stressed on the importance of its success and implementing its provisions in a way that serves the common interests of the two countries.

His Excellency highlighted that Iraq and its specialized educational institutions are keen on supporting the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear engineering and organizing the context of cooperation with the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) in this field.

Dr. Al-Aboudi appreciated provision of scholarships to Iraqi students to develop specialized technical cadres in Iraq.

For his part, Director of (ROSATOM,) Alexei Likhachev expressed the seriousness of the Russian side in coordinating between the two countries in order to embody the bilateral memorandum of understanding in the form of joint scientific programs in the field of peaceful use of atomic energy.
