Dean of the College of Science Participates in Ph.D. Dissertation Defense at the College of Education for Pure Sciences

Professor Dr. Hassan Jameel Jawad Al-Fatlawi, Dean of the faculty of Science at the University of Kerbala, participated as a member of the examination committee for the doctoral dissertation of student Marwa Abdul Kareem Ubaid Hussein Al-Sahar, from the Department of Biology at the College of Education for Pure Sciences.

The dissertation is entitled:
“The Effect of Biologically Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles from Algal Extracts Against Some Pathogenic Fungi.”

The research aimed to isolate Candida species from patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), and to identify them through morphological, microscopic, chemobiological, and physiological methods, in addition to using PCR for molecular diagnosis and testing their sensitivity to a range of antifungal agents.

The findings revealed that the isolated Candid species exhibited a high resistance to antifungal drugs, highlighting the severity of candidiasis in ICU patients. Moreover, the silver nanoparticles synthesized from algal extracts demonstrated efficacy in inhibiting the growth of some of these fungi.

The study recommended paying closer attention to the health of hospitalized patients, implementing precise diagnostic methods, closely monitoring fungal infections, and conducting whole-genome sequencing of fungal isolates to identify suitable treatments and limit the development of drug resistance.
