The Faculty of Science has discussed a master’s thesis about the molecular characterization of some virulence factors of Escherichia Coli bacteria isolated from urinary tract infections in the holy province of Karbala by the student Alaa Abdul-Amir Aziz.
The study aimed to clarify the investigation of the infection rates of this bacterium with multiple resistance to antibiotics through the molecular detection of some genes responsible for the virulence of Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli bacteria that cause acute urinary tract infection for patients in Karbala Governorate. as well as, addressing aspects of isolation and diagnosis of E.coli. From patients with acute urinary tract infections and investigation of the susceptibility of E. coli to biofilm formation and sensitivity of E. coli bacteria that cause urinary tract infections to antibiotics, and detection of virulence genes such as CsgA and TosA genes and integrons associated with multidrug resistance. Pharmacokinetics and clarification of the DNA sequencing procedure for the tosA gene.
The study concluded the conclusions of the emergence of a high percentage of isolates of E. coli bacteria with strong resistance to antibiotics, which reflects the unstudied use of antibiotics in the treatment of infections caused by these bacteria in the Holy Karbala Governorate. In addition, is to the appearance of a high percentage of isolates of biofilm-forming E.coli bacteria. To the extent of the virulence of these isolates and that E.coli isolates were virulent by possessing the genes tosA, csg A, and integrin class 1 that encode virulence elements in these bacteria. Regarding the protein produced by this gene, this is called a silent mutation.
The study has recommended the recommendations to conduct several studies to reveal the reasons for the increased resistance of E. coli bacteria isolated from urinary tract infections to antibiotics by revealing the antibiotic resistance genes, especially the genes responsible for encoding virulence factors. As well as spreading health awareness among citizens about the use of antibiotics Without consulting the doctor, to prevent the emergence of resistant bacterial strains and study the gene expression of resistance genes encoded by proteins of virulence elements by adopting .real time PCR technology.

The MSc student Amir Jawad Fadhl of the Department of Physics discussed his thesis entitled “Fabrication and Characterization of Thin Films of (NiO)1-x (ZnO)x for Gas Sensor Applications”. The discussion […]

The MSc student Amir Jawad Fadhl of the Department of Physics discussed his thesis entitled “Fabrication and Characterization of Thin Films of (NiO)1-x (ZnO)x for Gas Sensor Applications”. The discussion was held at the Great Hall in the College of Science on Sunday 20/9/2020.

The researcher stated that he prepared some compounds from (NiO)1-x (ZnO)x with different proportions of zinc oxide by mixing nickel oxide with high-purity zinc oxide, then put the mixture in an oven at 1273 ° C for five hours. The resulting powders were ground and pressed into tablets. Thin films of (NiO) 1-x (ZnO) x were prepared by using the 0.1M pulsed laser deposition method on different surfaces such as glass and silicon chips.

He added that the composition of the compounds and prepared films were examined using X-ray diffraction. The X-ray spectrum showed that all the prepared compounds and membranes were of a polycrystalline structure and that the peaks were identical with the cubic phase and the hexagonal phase of nickel oxide and zinc oxide at the content x = 0.0 and x = 1.0 respectively. On the other hand, the peaks were identical for both phases at other proportions.

The student explained that the goal of the work was to prepare thin films of (NiO) 1-x (ZnO) x on glass and silicon using PLD, measure the structural, electrical and optical properties of the (NiO) 1-x (ZnO) x thin films prepared on glass and manufacture a gas sensor from the thin films prepared on silicon for sensing NO2 and NH3.

It is noteworthy that the study was conducted under the joint supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Muhammed Abdul-Hur Kadhim of the College of Science, University of Karbala, and Prof. Dr. Bushra Abbas Hasan of the College of Science, University of Baghdad. The discussion committee was composed of Prof. Dr. Nahida Bakhit Hasan of Al-Zahrawi University College, Prof. Dr. Ghusoun Hameed Muhammed of the College of Science, University of Baghdad and Asst.

The MSc student Vian Muhammed Abdul Razzaq of the Chemistry Department discussed her thesis entitled “Relationship between fruit and vegetable intake and biochemical markers of metabolic disorders and heart diseases in type 2 diabetes patients”. The discussion was held at the Great Hall in the College of Science on Sunday 16/8/2020.

The researcher stated that the current study included collecting venous blood samples from (85) type 2 diabetes patients, in addition to (20) samples from healthy volunteers. Then, various biochemical indicators were estimated using Cobas spectroscopy. A special questionnaire prepared by the UK Health Foundation (UKDDQ) was also used to conduct human and demographic measurements related to the type of food and determine the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed by each volunteer in the study. The concentrations of vitamins (A, E, and C) in plasma were estimated using high performance chromatography (HPLC) device. The IBM SPSS statistical program and the GraphPad Prism 8 program were used to conduct all statistical analyses. The Unpaired t-test was further used to analyze most of the data obtained.

The researcher concluded that a balanced diet should include balanced quantities of fruits and vegetables as a source of vitamins, minerals and other supplements. This plays a role in developing antioxidant efficacy in healthy people as well as in type 2 diabetes patients, in addition to reducing the risk of possible complications of the disease.

It is noteworthy that the study was conducted under the joint supervision of Instructor Dr. Tha’ir Mahdi Madlul of the College of Science, Karbala University, and Instructor Dr. Ammar Waham Ashour of the College of Medicine, Al-Mustansiriya University. The discussion committee was composed of Prof. Dr. Sanad Baqir Muhammed of the College of Science for Women, University of Baghdad, Prof. Dr. Narjis Hadi Mansour of the College of Science, Karbala University, and Prof. Dr. Falah Sumum Daghal of the College of Science, Al-Mustansiriya University.

The MSc student Ali Haider Ali of the Department of Physics discussed his thesis entitled “Shape Transmission of Even-Even Ce 142-152 Nuclei in the Microscopic Interacting Boson Model”. The discussion […]

The MSc student Ali Haider Ali of the Department of Physics discussed his thesis entitled “Shape Transmission of Even-Even Ce 142-152 Nuclei in the Microscopic Interacting Boson Model”. The discussion was held at the Great Hall in the College of Science on Tuesday 15/9/2020.

The researcher stated that he conducted a comprehensive descriptive study of the characteristics of the cerium isotopes (Ce 142-152) within the first microscopic interacting boson model (IBM-1). The energy of mass nuclear states was studied using the PHINT program. Some energy levels were also predicted and the Uberm equivalence was confirmed for some cases. Additionally, the energy levels in the domain β were also predicted by estimating the energy of the second state with a twist and symmetry for the isotopes Ce 142-152.

He added that he calculated the reduced transitions probability of the electric quadrupole B(E2) and the magnetic dipole B(M1). The electromagnetic mixing ratio and quadrupole momentum of the isotopes under study were also calculated using the FBEM code.

The researcher compared the calculated results with the available experimental data and found that in general the comparisons are in good agreement with the experimental data. The isotope Ce 142 has the properties of vibrational determination and the isotope Ce 152 is very close to the rotational limit of SU (3). Whereas the isotopes Ce 144-150 have the properties of the transition region U(5) -SU(3), so they are considered first-order phase transition nuclei.

It is noteworthy that the study was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Amir Abdul-Amir Muhammed Ali of the College of Science, Karbala University. The discussion committee was composed of Prof. Dr. Ali Khalaf Hasan of the Kufa University, Prof. Uday Dawood Salman of the College of Science, Karbala University, and Prof. Dr. Fadhil Ismail Sharrad of Al-Ain University.

The MSc student Zahra’ Kadhim Chefcheer of the Department of Chemistry discussed her thesis entitled “Microwave Synthesis and Evaluation of Antibacterial Activities of Some New Heterocyclic Derivatives of Benzothiazole”. The discussion was held at the great hall in the College of Science on Sunday 23/8/2020.

The researcher stated that she prepared the azo aldehyde derivative through the reaction of a base solution of hydroxyl benzaldehyde compound with the diazonium salt solution of the amino-benzothiazole compound. The resulting aldehyde compound was treated with some available anilines.

She explained that she used the microwave agitation technique in absolute ethyl alcohol to obtain seven amine derivatives of benzothiazole respectively. As the cyclic addition of the resulting amines with succinic anhydride by using microwave technology in a small amount of benzene gave seven new oxazpan dione derivatives carrying the benzothiazole unit, respectively. On the other hand, the treatment of intermediate amines with phthalate anhydride by using microwave technology in a small amount of benzene produced seven new benzoxazepine diene derivatives carrying one benzothiazole unit, respectively. She added that she diagnosed the final compounds’ structures by means of quantitative elemental analysis (CHNS) and spectroscopic methods including infrared spectroscopy and proton magnetic resonance. And to test the bioactivity of the required compounds against two types of bacteria, Staphylococcus aurous, positive for Gram and Escherichia coli, negative for Gram stain. As the test results indicated that all the compounds of Oxazepine and Oxazepine showed a greater effect than gentamycin towards the positive bacteria for the Gram stain. Moreover, most of the compounds showed a greater effect than gentamycin against the negative bacteria for the Gram stain.

It is to be mentioned that the study was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Zaid Hasan Aboud of the College of Science, University of Karbala.
