Panel Discussion at the College of Science on Viruses and Their Importance to Global Health

The Razzaza and Western Euphrates Research Unit at the College of Science – University of Kerbala organized a panel discussion titled “Viruses: A General Overview”, as part of its scientific activities for the final quarter of the 2024–2025 academic year.
This event came in response to the growing global interest in virology, particularly following international data indicating that 99.9% of the pandemics the world has faced over the past eighty years originated from viruses transmitted from animals to humans due to certain genetic mutations.
The session aimed to shed light on pathogenic viruses and the importance of their study, while also discussing the potential for establishing specialized research groups in this field within the college — a first step toward advancing impactful scientific research in health-related areas.
The lecture was delivered by Lecturer Islam Ahmed Abd Al-Sahib, a faculty member at the College of Science who holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Virology from a prestigious university in Hungary. He presented a scientific overview covering fundamental concepts of virology, virus evolution, and their role in the emergence of epidemics.
This activity is part of the college’s ongoing efforts to support scientific research and stay abreast of global developments in the life and medical sciences.
