Faculty of Science Organizes a Workshop on “Radiation Safety and Security in Laboratories”

The Chemical, Biological, and Radiological Safety and Security Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Science, University of Kerbala, organized a workshop entitled “Radiation Safety and Security in Laboratories.”

The workshop aimed to raise awareness about proper procedures for handling radioactive sources and radiation-generating devices, such as X-ray machines, to ensure the highest levels of safety for personnel and the university environment.

The speakers emphasized the concept of radiation safety, which is based on minimizing radiation doses to the lowest practicable level according to the ALARA principle (As Low As Reasonably Achievable). They also highlighted the importance of radiation security, which focuses on protecting radioactive sources from theft, sabotage, or unauthorized use.

Additionally, the workshop underscored the need for continuous training for all laboratory personnel and the implementation of emergency response plans to address any potential radiation incidents or leaks, ensuring a safe working environment that complies with international standards.

The workshop was delivered by:

Prof. Dr. Abdul Sattar Kareem Hashim

Asst. Prof. Dr. Hawraa Mohammed Abbas

Asst. Prof. Dr. Ouras Mousa Imran
