Study at the University of Kerbala Explores the Extraction of Active Compounds from Physalis angulata and Their Effect on Klebsiella pneumoniae

A master’s thesis in the Department of Life Sciences, College of Science – University of Kerbala, presented by Lama Ibrahim Rahman, focused on optimizing the extraction conditions for active compounds from Physalis angulata and evaluating the effect of its methanolic extract on antibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. The study also examined its impact on K2A gene expression using RT-qPCR technology.

The results demonstrated the efficiency of methanol in extracting flavonoids and phenols from the plant, as well as its role in inhibiting bacterial gene expression, highlighting its potential as a natural antibiotic.

The study recommended purifying the active compounds, investigating their interaction with antibiotics and nanomaterials, and conducting toxicity assessments to ensure safe application.
